Wood Cut Blocks

This wood cut block design above is so lovely. It has a very celtic feel to it. What I love though is that the initials, particularly the I, is drawn in a way to be both illustration and text. It looks as if it is emerging from the forest and made from the leaves from its background but the structure of the letter brings it from just illustration to lettering. It's a slow gentle introduction from image to text. The second letter is plan (no leaves) and carries it carries the letter before it into a word and the text realm.

I really like this copper engraved print. I think its so beautiful. I'm amazed at how much detail they can get from a piece of copper made into, effectively a stamp...??? Especially the red section. How they've incorporated the illustrationinto the text is pretty sectacular. Both elements seem to merge into each other but are whole with both text and image. Singularly they would still both be beautiful, but combined they are mazing. So fluid. The copper undeniably allows for greater detail in the illustration.

Not sure if you can see the detail properly here? click on the second link to get larger image and better quality.
