William Morris & the Kelmscott Press

Morris in establishing the Kelmscott Press, believed quality was more important then quanity. he wanted to make books that were just as beautiful and well made as the illustrated manuscipts.


Morris was interested in the printing types and being a designer, designed type for printing. He was talented in so many areas... and made furniture, wall paper, books, printed documents...


The main influences on Morris' books were: Quality and also Gothic period influenced his work, as did the ambition to recreate beautiful books with hgh quality craftsmanship in the illustration, doecoration and general fashioing of the printed books and works.

The main innovations introduced by Morris were textiles and wall papers, furniture, Design and a philospohy of design as well. He believed in unity between the artists and the designers. He introduced typefaces, decorative borders and initials, a collection of medieval story books that had been illustrated, the kelmscott chaucer.....

The criticisms levelled at Kelmscott press Volumes - were that they were too expensive. because they were such a high quality of work, where only the best materials were used, it went through several expertise hands in the making of, etc.... the books were not made for the common man... They were for the elite society.
